The United Auto Workers (UAW) suffered a setback when Mercedes-Benz workers in Alabama voted against union representation. The NLRB reported that 56% of the workers, or 2,642 individuals, voted against the UAW. Despite this, over 90% of the eligible workers participated in the election. The union and company have the opportunity to file objections to the election results within five business days. If no objections are filed, the non-union status will be certified, and the UAW will have to wait a year to file for another union election.

The vote against union representation at Mercedes-Benz is a significant blow to the UAW’s efforts, particularly following their successful organizing drive at a Volkswagen plant in Tennessee. The loss is expected to impact the union’s ongoing campaign to organize 13 non-union automakers in the U.S. The UAW had previously secured favorable contracts with Detroit automakers, including wage increases and other benefits. UAW President Shawn Fain acknowledged the disappointment of the vote, but remained optimistic, emphasizing the resilience and determination of the workers.

The Mercedes-Benz vote was anticipated to present challenges for the union, especially compared to the Volkswagen plant where the UAW had made previous organizing attempts. Located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the Mercedes-Benz plant has been in operation since 1997 and produces a variety of vehicles, including gas-powered and electric SUVs. In the past year, workers at the plant have faced multiple unfair labor practice charges filed by the UAW against Mercedes-Benz. These charges allege various violations, such as disciplining employees for discussing unionization and restricting union activities.

The UAW has also filed unfair labor practice charges against other automakers, including Honda, Hyundai, Lucid, Rivian, Tesla, and Toyota. These charges highlight the ongoing efforts of the union to address alleged violations and support workers’ rights in the industry. While the outcome of the Mercedes-Benz vote may have been disappointing, Fain emphasized the determination of the UAW to continue their efforts to organize and advocate for workers across different automakers. The union remains committed to its mission and is focused on supporting workers in their fight for fair treatment and representation.
