On Ukrainian Independence Day, Ukraine President Volodymy Zelenskyy confirmed that Russia launched a heavy strike against Ukraine, firing over 200 missiles and drones at civilian and energy targets across the country. Zelenskyy called on his Western allies to remove restrictions on long-range defensive strikes and provide more support to help Ukraine defend against Russia’s continuous aerial attacks. The attacks targeted various regions of Ukraine, including western regions such as Volyn and Lviv, as well as populated cities like Kyiv and Odesa. Five people were reported killed and 30 others injured in the strikes.

The Ukrainian State Emergency Service spokesperson confirmed the casualties and stated that European allies could do more to protect lives if they coordinated with Ukraine’s F-16s and air defense systems. Zelenskyy stressed the importance of unity in defending against Russian missiles and drones, calling for greater support from Western nations in strengthening Ukraine’s air defense systems. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have targeted storage facilities housing aviation weapons given to Ukraine by Western allies, disrupting rail transportation to the combat contact line.

Zelenskyy has repeatedly urged allies to provide Ukraine with additional F-16s, Patriot batteries, and to lift restrictions on long-range strike permissions. The U.S., Netherlands, Germany, Romania, and Italy have agreed to send Patriot systems and a SAMP-T system to help Ukraine defend against cruise and ballistic missiles as well as combat aircraft. Zelenskyy emphasized the need for these systems to protect Ukrainian citizens in border communities and prevent Russia’s potential aggression. He referred to his Kursk operation as a means to establish a buffer zone against Russia’s attacks in northern Ukraine.

Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of decisive action from Western partners in stopping Russian aggression and preventing further terror. He called on countries like America, Britain, and France to use their power to help Ukraine combat the ongoing conflict. Zelenskyy stated that unity and a strong response to Russian aggression are crucial, emphasizing that a lack of resolve only fuels terror and further threats. The president emphasized the need for Western allies to support Ukraine’s efforts to defend itself and protect its citizens from further attacks.

Overall, Russia’s heavy strike on Ukraine, the casualties resulting from the attacks, and Zelenskyy’s calls for increased support and unity from Western allies to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense systems and prevent further aggression from Russia have underscored the urgency of the situation. The ongoing conflict between the two countries continues to escalate, with Ukraine facing significant challenges in defending its territories and safeguarding its population. Zelenskyy’s appeals for decisive action and international solidarity highlight the need for a coordinated and robust response to address the escalating crisis and protect Ukrainian sovereignty.
