A 35-year-old Massachusetts man was seriously injured after being attacked by two grizzly bears in Grand Teton National Park just as the summer tourist season began. The victim was airlifted to a hospital after the attack on the Signal Mountain Summit Road, a popular peak in the park. The man is expected to fully recover and is in stable condition. The incident prompted officials to temporarily close the access road and hiking trail in the area, which is known to be home to both black and grizzly bears. North America has an estimated population of 900,000 black bears and 45,000 grizzly bears, and fatal bear attacks are rare.

Experts recommend safety measures to minimize the chances of encountering bears while hiking, including checking for signs of recent bear activity, making noise to avoid startling bears, hiking in larger groups, carrying bear spray, and reporting any bear encounters to authorities. In nearby Yellowstone National Park, bear traps have been set up to monitor and research local bear populations. Although these traps will not be placed near hiking trails with frequent foot traffic, the public is urged to be vigilant and avoid these areas if they come across them. The remote and rugged terrain of northwestern Wyoming attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists for outdoor activities each summer.

The summer tourist season in Grand Teton National Park and nearby Cody, Wyoming, brings in hundreds of thousands of out-of-state visitors for hiking and mountaineering. The area is known for its rugged mountains and wildlife, including bears. While encounters with grizzly bears are less common than those with black bears, they can be more dangerous due to their larger size. Since 1784, there have been 66 fatal attacks attributed to black bears and 82 fatal attacks attributed to brown bears. Despite these statistics, fatal bear attacks are still extremely rare, averaging less than one per year in North America. The victim of the recent grizzly bear attack in Grand Teton National Park is expected to fully recover from his injuries.

Authorities in Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park are taking precautions to monitor and research bear populations in the area, setting up bear traps to gather data. It is important for visitors to be aware of the potential presence of bears in the area and to take necessary safety precautions while hiking or camping. Bringing bear spray, hiking in groups, and making noise are recommended safety measures to avoid startling bears. The public is also urged to report any bear encounters to park authorities to ensure the safety of both humans and bears in the area. The Associated Press contributed to the report on the recent grizzly bear attack in Grand Teton National Park.
