A “Kona Low” has brought heavy rainfall and the threat of flash flooding to several islands in Hawaii. The National Weather Service issued a warning for a “multi-day heavy rain event,” particularly for Kauai, Oahu, and Maui. The cyclone developed over the state on Tuesday night and is expected to continue to bring excessive rainfall to the area. Forecasters described the event as similar to a fire hose shooting water, with the potential for flash flooding being the highest on Wednesday night into Thursday.

The wet weather is being driven by a “Kona Low,” a tropical storm that reverses the direction of the wind, bringing moisture-heavy air to the islands. Showers are expected to increase throughout Wednesday, especially over the western half of the state, with heavy bands of rain and embedded thunderstorms. The NWS warned of potential flash flooding over Oahu and Maui County, with large rises in streams expected due to the widespread rain event. A Flood Watch is in effect for the entire state, with the greatest chance for flooding impacts on Oahu and Maui County.

On Thursday and Thursday night, there could be a slight decrease in rain rates, but a steady stream of moisture with prolonged periods of moderate to heavy rain is expected around Oahu and Maui County. By Friday, the “Kona Low” is expected to shift westward, reducing the flooding danger but showers are still possible. Kauai is likely to see persistent showery weather with the possibility of significant flooding impacts over the weekend, possibly exceeding two inches of rain. People have been warned to be prepared for property damage and to monitor forecasts for Flash Flood Warnings.

Honolulu’s Flood Watch advises residents to be prepared to take action in case of flash flooding and to be aware that flooding can occur even if it is not raining in their location. Signs of heavy rain or thunderstorms should be taken seriously, and people should move quickly away from flood-prone areas. The NWS has issued flood advisories for Hawaii island, Kauai, Oahu, and Maui due to heavy rain rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Showers are expected to trend down in the evening, but the potential for flash flooding remains a concern. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property from the impact of the “Kona Low” and the heavy rainfall it brings to Hawaii.
