A 20-year-old man from Missouri pleaded guilty to attempting to attack the White House using a rented U-Haul vehicle, as reported by the Justice Department. Sai Varshith Kandula, a lawful permanent resident of the US, crashed the rented vehicle into barriers near the White House property in May 2023. He then exited the vehicle and displayed a banner with a Nazi swastika before being arrested by authorities. The incident caused damage totaling over $50,000 to U-Haul International and over $4,000 to the National Park Service, but no individuals were harmed during the attack.
Kandula’s motive for the attempted attack was to gain access to the White House in order to seize political power and establish a dictatorship based on the Nazi Germany ideology. He had been planning the attack for weeks and confessed to investigators after his arrest that he would have arranged for President Joe Biden to be killed to achieve his objective. Prior to renting the U-Haul, Kandula had attempted to procure armed guards and an armored convoy from a security company in Virginia, signaling premeditation and intent in his efforts to carry out the attack.
Following his guilty plea, Kandula is set to be sentenced on August 23, with the charge of willful injury or depredation of property of the United States carrying a maximum prison sentence of 10 years. Born in Chandanagar, India, Kandula was a green card holder at the time of the attempted attack. He flew from St. Louis to Washington, DC, before renting the U-Haul and crashing into the barriers near the White House property. The incident led to his arrest by the US Park Police and Secret Service, preventing any injuries to White House personnel.
The attack, which occurred just after 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of H Street NW and 16th Street NW, showcased Kandula’s extremist beliefs as he waved a Nazi swastika banner in front of the White House property.
