Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof recently announced that 11 out of the 29 demands made by Sabah and Sarawak in relation to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) have been resolved. These demands include the handover of regulatory power over gas supply, amendments to the Inland Revenue Board Act, and the administration of the judiciary in the two states. Mr Yusof, who chairs the MA63 technical committee, explained that seven demands were settled under Anwar Ibrahim’s administration, three under Ismail Sabri Yaakob, and one under Muhyiddin Yassin.

However, there are still unresolved matters that need to be addressed, such as state rights over continental shelves, oil royalty, cash payments for petroleum, stamp duty, and the allocation of federal parliamentary seats. Mr Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the federal government’s commitment to improving the dignity of all states in Malaysia, especially those in rural, remote, and poverty-stricken areas. He believes that collaboration, dialogue, and teamwork between the federal and state governments, including those of Sabah and Sarawak, are essential for achieving this goal.

Mr Anwar emphasized the importance of serving all Malaysians, regardless of their background, for the success of Malaysia. He encouraged all Malaysians to celebrate the international successes of their people, such as the recent achievements of Malaysian Paralympics athletes at the Games in Paris. Regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion, Mr Anwar urged unity in pride for Malaysian achievements. He highlighted the spirit of inclusivity and national pride that should be fostered among all Malaysians.

The ongoing discussions and resolutions surrounding MA63 demonstrate Malaysia’s efforts to address historical grievances and strengthen the relationship between the federal government and the states of Sabah and Sarawak. By resolving key demands and tackling remaining issues, Malaysia aims to promote unity, collaboration, and progress across the country. It is essential for leaders at all levels to work together to ensure that the rights and interests of all Malaysians are protected and advanced for the betterment of the nation.

The commitment of leaders like Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof and Anwar Ibrahim to addressing the demands of Sabah and Sarawak under MA63 reflects Malaysia’s dedication to upholding the principles of fairness, inclusivity, and respect for state rights. Through constructive dialogue and cooperation, Malaysia can overcome historical challenges and build a stronger, more united nation. The resolution of these demands will contribute to a more harmonious and prosperous future for all Malaysians, regardless of their background or beliefs.

Moving forward, Malaysia must continue to prioritize the resolution of remaining issues related to MA63, including state rights over resources and revenues, as well as the fair distribution of parliamentary seats. By working together to address these challenges, Malaysia can strengthen its democracy, governance, and commitment to serving all its citizens. The spirit of unity, pride, and collaboration exemplified by leaders like Fadillah Yusof and Anwar Ibrahim can guide Malaysia towards a future of shared prosperity and success for all its people.
