A 4.7 magnitude earthquake centered 4 miles north of Malibu was felt widely in the Los Angeles area on Thursday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the temblor was about 7 miles below the surface. The jolt was felt as far as 45 miles away in Orange County, with some residents reporting their lamps swaying and other items moving in their homes. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that fire authorities were surveying the city, but there were no immediate reports of injuries. The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services was actively monitoring the quake and checking for any damage, as a number of earthquakes have hit the area throughout the year.

A 4.4 magnitude earthquake in August was felt from the Los Angeles area all the way to San Diego, swaying buildings, rattling dishes, and setting off car alarms. This morning’s preliminary magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Malibu shook the Los Angeles area, prompting @LAFD to activate and conduct a routine survey of the city to assess for any damages. Rene Vasquez, manager at The Country Kitchen breakfast place in Malibu, reported that the shaking lasted a few seconds and kitchen staff ducked outside as a precaution, but there was no damage. Several celebrities, including Paris Hilton and Khloe Kardashian, took to social media to share that they were awakened by the earthquake and commented on its intensity.

The earthquake comes as the region has been dealing with three major wildfires burning east of Los Angeles, which have destroyed dozens of homes and forced thousands to evacuate. The blazes erupted amid a blistering heatwave that has recently subsided. @Cal_OES, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, is actively monitoring the impacts of the 4.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred north of Malibu at 7:28 am on Thursday. This is a developing story, and updates are expected to provide more information on any potential damages or effects of the earthquake on the region.
