Longtime U.S. Rep. William D. Delahunt of Massachusetts, a Democrat, has passed away at the age of 82 after battling a long-term illness. Delahunt served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 14 years, representing Massachusetts’s 10th congressional district. He also held positions in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and as Norfolk County district attorney. The Delahunt family announced his death on Saturday, stating that he passed away peacefully. While the cause of death was not disclosed, the family celebrated his remarkable life and legacy of dedication and service.

Delahunt was known as a Democratic stalwart who postponed his retirement from Washington to help pass former President Barack Obama’s legislative agenda. He died at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts, following a long-term illness. Democratic U.S. Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts praised Delahunt’s long public service as a legislator in the nation’s capital and a prosecutor in Norfolk County. President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela also mourned Delahunt’s passing, highlighting his efforts to help low-income Massachusetts residents by brokering a deal with then-Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to obtain heating oil.

Delahunt stepped down from the U.S. House in January 2011, after considering retirement but being convinced by fellow veteran legislator Sen. Edward M. Kennedy to stay and help pass Obama’s legislative initiatives. He was an early supporter of Obama, becoming the first member of the Massachusetts congressional delegation to endorse his presidential bid. Delahunt’s decision to retire in 2010 was influenced by Kennedy’s passing the previous year, prompting him to prioritize spending time with his family, friends, and loved ones beyond the political sphere.

The William D. Delahunt Norfolk County Courthouse stands as a tribute to Delahunt’s vision and dedication to public service, with the doors opening every day for the hard work of making lives better, mirroring Delahunt’s own contributions. Delahunt’s involvement in brokering a deal with Chavez for heating oil and attendance at Chavez’s state funeral in 2013 are prominent examples of his dedication to helping those in need. His absence leaves a significant void in his family and the hearts of many who knew and appreciated his wisdom, solace, and humor.

Delahunt’s impact on Massachusetts and the country is remembered through his commitment to serving the people and working towards positive change. His decision to delay retirement and continue working in Washington to support Obama’s legislative agenda showcases his dedication to public service and making a difference in the lives of his constituents. Delahunt leaves behind a legacy of service, inspiration, and commitment to helping others, with his contributions recognized and celebrated by colleagues, friends, and admirers.
