Grammy Award-winning singer and fashion entrepreneur, Lizzo, took to Instagram to declare that she is quitting due to the online criticism she has faced. She expressed feeling tired of being dragged by people in her life and on the internet, despite her desire to make music, make people happy, and make the world a better place. Lizzo highlighted the ridicule and lies she faces and stated that she feels unwanted in the world due to the constant character attacks by those who do not know her. Messages of support poured in from celebrities like Queen Latifah, Eric André, and Sophia Bush, who reminded Lizzo that the internet is not real life and that she should protect herself.

Lizzo, born Melissa Jefferson, rose to fame with hits like “Truth Hurts” and “About Damn Time,” with empowering lyrics centered on body positivity. She launched Yitty, a shapewear line, designed for all body types. Despite her efforts to promote these ideals, Lizzo has often been met with mockery and ridicule. This is not the first time Lizzo has considered leaving the music industry, as she has mentioned giving up and quitting due to the negative comments she receives, particularly concerning her appearance.

In contrast to her statement on Friday, where she expressed feeling drained by the constant criticism, a previous Instagram post on March 17 revealed that she was writing some of the best music and was excited for her fans to hear it. Despite facing pushback, Lizzo has continued to find success in her career, winning four Grammy Awards and an Emmy, as well as having her music featured in popular films. She has also expanded her fashion brand by promoting a new swimwear line.

Lizzo’s statement about quitting comes amidst ongoing legal battles. In 2023, she was sued by a designer and three former backup dancers who accused her of creating a hostile work environment during a tour. Lizzo has denied these allegations and has filed motions to dismiss the lawsuits. While some claims were dismissed by a judge, the case filed by the dancers was allowed to proceed to trial. Despite these legal challenges, Lizzo remains committed to her music and her mission of spreading positivity through her art.
