Lee Kiefer, a back-to-back gold medalist in Olympic fencing, approaches her sport and her medical school studies with a similar mindset. She sees both as opportunities for constant learning and growth. Balancing training for the Olympics with medical school requires meticulous planning and dedication. Kiefer managed both pursuits for over two years before taking a leave of absence following the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Despite the challenging schedule, she emphasizes the importance of being kind to oneself to avoid overwhelming stress.
Upon returning to the University of Kentucky Medical College after the Paris Olympics, Kiefer will restart her third year of studies. While she is unsure of her future medical specialty, she looks forward to being in the same year as her husband, Gerek Meinhardt, who is also an Olympic fencer and medical student. Kiefer values having Meinhardt’s support, as he understands the unique demands of being an elite athlete and a medical student. Despite not medaling in the individual competition, Meinhardt will compete in the team event, providing crucial strategy advice to Kiefer.
Kiefer’s hard work paid off as she secured the gold medal in the women’s individual foil event, defeating her teammate Lauren Scruggs who won silver. Scruggs made history as the first Black fencer to medal as an individual for Team USA. While Kiefer is focused on the upcoming team event, she feels optimistic and confident in her and her teammates’ abilities. Kiefer comes from a family of medical professionals, with both her parents, siblings, and several aunts and uncles working in the medical field. With a range of medical expertise in her family, Kiefer jokes that they can handle any medical needs someone may have.
Despite the intense competition and training, Kiefer has enjoyed her time in the Olympic village, connecting with athletes from around the world and experiencing the camaraderie of the games. She looks forward to watching other sports and events once her team competition is over. The Paris Olympics are being streamed on Peacock, and Kiefer encourages fans to tune in and support the athletes. With her dedication, talent, and support system, Kiefer continues to excel in both fencing and her medical studies, embodying the spirit of perseverance and achievement.
