President Biden convened the Group of Seven advanced democracies to coordinate a response to Iran’s recent aerial attack on Israel. The G7 leaders issued a joint statement condemning the attack and expressing solidarity with Israel. The United States aided Israel in shooting down drones and missiles launched by Iran, marking the first direct military assault by Iran on Israel without significant damage. Biden reassured Israel of U.S. support, urging them to claim victory for their defense efforts and discouraging a larger retaliatory strike against Iran.

During a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Biden emphasized the need for Israel to show restraint and not engage in offensive actions against Iran. The U.S. military deployed aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the region to assist Israel in defending against the attacks. Biden also had a call with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, who warned that any escalatory measures by Israel could lead to a broader conflict in the region. The G7 meeting aimed to coordinate a united diplomatic response to Iran’s actions and prevent further destabilization in the region.

The U.S. and Israel had been anticipating retaliation from Iran following a suspected Israeli strike on an Iranian consular building in Syria that resulted in casualties, including senior Iranian generals. Senator Marco Rubio criticized the White House for allegedly leaking details of Biden’s conversation with Netanyahu, suggesting it was an attempt to appease calls for a cease-fire in Gaza. The goal of the meeting was to encourage Israel to exercise restraint and avoid escalating tensions further, similar to ongoing efforts to curtail Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

The G7 leaders affirmed their commitment to Israel’s security and expressed readiness to take further measures in response to destabilizing initiatives from Iran. The joint statement from the G7 condemned Iran’s actions, which were seen as a threat to the region’s stability. The U.S. worked closely with Israel to defend against the attacks, with the majority of inbound weapons being intercepted without causing significant damage. Biden reiterated the U.S.’s support for Israel’s defense efforts and urged them to avoid escalating the situation with Iran.

In his conversations with Netanyahu and King Abdullah II, Biden emphasized the importance of de-escalating the situation and preventing further conflict in the region. The U.S. military’s deployment to the region was intended to support Israel’s defense capabilities and deter further attacks from Iran. The G7 meeting focused on coordinating a united diplomatic response to Iran’s actions and preventing an uncontrollable regional escalation. The ongoing efforts to protect civilian lives in Gaza and address the conflict between Israel and Hamas were also part of the discussions among the G7 leaders.
