According to the complaint, once the men were removed from the plane, they noticed that other Black men were also being ejected, leading them to believe all Black male passengers were targeted. American Airlines representatives informed the men that a complaint about body odor was the reason for their removal, despite none of the plaintiffs having offensive body odor. The lawsuit alleges that the men were eventually allowed back on the flight after an hour, but endured a traumatic and humiliating experience for the rest of the journey.
American Airlines has stated that they take all claims of discrimination seriously and are currently investigating the matter, as it does not align with their core values. The plaintiffs are seeking declaratory relief, compensation for pain and suffering, punitive damages to deter future discrimination, and attorneys fees. The complaint also references a previous warning issued by the NAACP in 2017 related to American Airlines’ alleged pattern of discriminating against Black passengers, which was later lifted after the airline addressed the concerns.
