Law enforcement officials in 19 countries have successfully shut down an online platform called LabHost that was generating revenue by selling phishing kits to cybercriminals. The platform was established in 2021 and aimed at making it easier for hackers to create fake websites to deceive individuals into divulging sensitive information such as email addresses, passwords, and bank details.
Led by the Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom, the operation resulted in the arrest of 37 suspects and the search of more than 70 locations in the UK and around the world. LabHost had received nearly £1 million ($1,173,000) in payments from criminal users, with around 2,000 users registered on the site and paying a monthly subscription. Additionally, LabHost had obtained over 480,000 bank card numbers, 64,000 pin numbers, and more than 1 million passwords for various online services.
Europol, the European Union law enforcement agency, coordinated the international police action in collaboration with the US Secret Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and authorities in countries such as Australia and Finland. Four individuals involved in the running of LabHost, including the developer of the service, were arrested as part of the operation. The investigation into LabHost revealed at least 40,000 phishing domains and approximately 10,000 users operating worldwide.
LabHost offered a range of illicit services for a monthly fee averaging $249, which could be customized and deployed with just a few clicks. Depending on the subscription level, criminals were provided with access to various targets including financial institutions, postal delivery services, and telecommunication providers. One of the services provided was a campaign management tool called LabRat, enabling criminals to monitor and control phishing attacks in real time while bypassing enhanced security measures like two-factor authentication.
