Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine’s latest figures indicate that Russia has lost over half a million troops, showcasing the significant toll that Vladimir Putin’s war is taking on his own personnel. The daily tally of Russian troop losses, including both killed and injured, has been steadily increasing, with the highest recorded losses on May 12 reaching 1,740 troops. This brings the total number of troop losses to a grim milestone of 500,080 since the war began on February 24, 2022. While casualty counts and equipment losses are difficult to verify, these figures provide some insight into the impact of the ongoing conflict, now in its third year.

Accurately determining Russian losses is challenging, as Moscow has not updated its figure since September 2022 when it reported 5,937 deaths. Ukraine’s estimates align with those of its allies, with France stating that Russian military losses are around 500,000, including 150,000 deaths. The UK estimates Russian losses at over 450,000 killed or wounded, with tens of thousands deserting. A U.S. intelligence report from December 2022 suggested that Russian losses reached 315,000, representing 90% of its pre-invasion force. An ongoing investigation by Mediazona and BBC Russia puts the number of confirmed dead Russian soldiers at 54,185 as of May 2024, although the actual figure is likely higher.

In response to the significant losses, Putin signed a decree in December 2023 providing financial compensation to families of soldiers killed in the war. Despite the high casualties, over 100,000 men signed contracts with the Russian Defense Ministry in the first three months of 2024. The war continues to escalate, with Russia launching a new offensive in northeastern Ukraine, further increasing the strain on Russian troops. While both sides inflate each other’s reported losses, the figures illustrate the devastating toll of the conflict, highlighting the human cost of Putin’s military aggression in Ukraine.

The ongoing conflict has entered its third year, with Russian troops making significant advances in eastern Ukraine, particularly in the Donetsk oblast. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s daily updates on Russian troop losses reflect the intensification of the fighting, with record-high casualties reported in recent weeks. As the war continues to escalate, the impact on both Ukrainian and Russian forces is becoming increasingly apparent, underscoring the brutal nature of the conflict and the relentless toll it is taking on both sides.

Despite the challenges in accurately assessing the number of Russian casualties, the estimates provided by Ukraine and its allies offer a glimpse into the scale of the conflict’s human cost. The continued fighting and ongoing loss of life underscore the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution to the war, as both countries face devastating consequences from the violence. As the conflict shows no sign of abating, the growing casualty figures serve as a stark reminder of the profound suffering and destruction caused by Putin’s military campaign in Ukraine.
