Since the beginning of the year, Russia has launched over 30,000 attacks within Ukrainian territory, according to Kyiv’s Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Oleksii Serhieiev. This number is nearly half of the total attacks recorded in 2023, indicating a significant increase in Russian shelling in 2024. The attacks have targeted critical infrastructure, residential areas, and energy facilities across Ukraine, leading to over 30,000 civilian casualties in the past two years as reported by the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine. In response to these acts, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly called on the international community to hold Russia accountable for committing crimes against humanity.

During a meeting with representatives of the Bavaria State Parliament in Germany, Serhieiev also mentioned that Ukraine’s National Police have documented 116,000 war crimes committed by Russian occupiers. The International Criminal Court has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin and members of his military of targeting civilians and has issued arrest warrants against them. Zelensky emphasized the importance of seeking justice for these crimes in a video message, stating that justice is stronger than the walls of the Kremlin. Russian oil facilities have also been targeted by Ukrainian forces, with claims of launching airstrikes on a Russian airbase in Morozovsk that destroyed warplanes and injured personnel.

In response to Ukraine’s increased attacks on Russian territory, including firing drones in the southern region of Rostov, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported intercepting 44 missiles out of the over 50 launched. However, an explosive device in one of the intercepted drones detonated, injuring eight people. Ukrainian officials claimed responsibility for the airstrike on the Russian airbase in Morozovsk, causing significant damage to warplanes and personnel. These ongoing conflicts between Russia and Ukraine have escalated tensions in the region, with both sides accusing each other of committing war crimes and retaliatory attacks.

The situation in Ukraine remains dire, with Russia continuing to target Ukrainian territory and critical infrastructure, leading to a high number of civilian casualties. The UN has documented over 30,000 civilian casualties in Ukraine over the past two years, highlighting the devastating impact of the conflict on innocent civilians. As both countries exchange attacks and accusations of war crimes, the international community is called upon to intervene and hold those responsible for atrocities accountable. Zelensky’s plea for justice and Russia’s denial of targeting civilians underscore the urgent need for a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has also extended to economic and energy targets, as Ukrainian forces target Russian oil facilities deep behind the front lines. With claims of launching airstrikes on Russian airbases and damaging warplanes, the tensions between the two countries show no signs of easing. Despite both sides making claims of successful attacks and defensive measures, the impact on civilian populations and critical infrastructure remains a grave concern. The international community’s response and efforts to hold those responsible for war crimes accountable will be crucial in resolving the conflict and bringing peace to the region.
