The cross-examination of Michael Cohen, a key witness in the Trump hush money trial, took a dramatic turn when Donald Trump attorney Todd Blanche aggressively challenged Cohen’s memory of a phone call with Trump just before the payment to Stormy Daniels’ attorney. Blanche presented text messages that appeared to contradict Cohen’s account of the call, raising doubts about his credibility. Cohen maintained that the call was about the Daniels matter, but Blanche pressed him on inconsistencies in his testimony.

Blanche continued to question Cohen’s credibility by pointing out inconsistencies in his statements over the years, including his recanted guilty plea and desire to work in the White House. Cohen defended his actions, stating that he has taken accountability for his crimes, but continued to blame others for his situation. Blanche also challenged Cohen on his interactions with Trump, including seeking a pardon and his desire to work in Trump’s White House.

Throughout the trial, Trump has appeared disinterested in Cohen’s testimony, with his body language indicating minimal engagement. However, Trump’s demeanor shifted during Blanche’s questioning of Cohen, showing more interest in the proceedings. Cohen remained calm and composed during his testimony, emphasizing the importance of his memory of key conversations despite thousands of calls made over the years.

As the trial nears its conclusion, both the prosecution and defense are preparing for closing arguments and jury deliberation. Prosecutors have indicated that they have no more witnesses to call after Cohen’s testimony, while the defense may still call additional witnesses. The possibility of Trump testifying in his own defense remains uncertain, as well as the inclusion of former Cohen attorney Bob Costello in the proceedings.

Judge Merchan has indicated that summations could begin as early as Tuesday, with the potential for the jury to receive the case next week. The limited court days leading up to the Memorial Day holiday may impact the trial schedule, with Merchan suggesting adjustments to accommodate a swift conclusion. The trial’s focus on Cohen’s credibility and his interactions with Trump has been a central theme throughout the proceedings, with both sides presenting evidence and arguments to sway the jury’s decision.
