The Central Okanagan Food Bank is facing a surge in demand as food prices continue to rise due to inflation. The food bank has seen a 30 percent increase in demand over the past year, serving more than 12,000 people each month. According to the 2024 Food Price Report, the average family of four is expected to spend over $16,000 on food in 2024, a $700 increase from the previous year. This increase in food prices is putting a strain on families who are already struggling to make ends meet.

Ross Hickey, an Associate Economics Professor, points out that the issue is not just food inflation but also an income problem. While food prices have risen, wages have not increased at the same rate, making it difficult for families to afford basic necessities like food. This discrepancy between rising food prices and stagnant wages is putting many people in a difficult financial situation, leading them to rely on food banks for assistance.

In response to the growing demand for food assistance, the Central Okanagan Food Bank is working to provide holiday hampers to families in need. These hampers contain essential items like pancake mix, turkeys, and cereals, giving families a little extra help during the holiday season. The food bank is also holding a turkey drive with the goal of collecting 500 turkeys to distribute to families in need. The community has been a vital source of support for the food bank, allowing them to continue meeting the need for food assistance.

Despite the challenges posed by rising food prices and increasing demand, the Central Okanagan Food Bank remains hopeful that they will be able to continue providing essential food assistance to those in need. Community support has been instrumental in helping the food bank meet the growing demand for their services. Donations of food, money, and time are crucial in ensuring that the food bank can continue to support families in the community who are experiencing food insecurity.

As the holiday season approaches, the Central Okanagan Food Bank is urging the community to come together and support their efforts to provide food assistance to those in need. The turkey drive being held on November 30 is a great opportunity for people to donate a turkey or ham to help ensure that families have a special holiday meal. By coming together as a community and supporting organizations like the Central Okanagan Food Bank, we can help ensure that everyone has access to the food they need to thrive.
