Kelowna International Airport is currently undergoing a multi-phase construction project that is estimated to cost $442 million and will span until 2033. Phase one of the project, a $108 million investment, is already underway and focuses on expanding the terminal, including doubling the size of the departure lounge and increasing security screening. This expansion aims to create a more efficient and comfortable experience for outgoing passengers by adding food and beverage offerings and shopping options. The construction is expected to cause delays for aircraft during the busiest travel months, with up to a 15-minute wait due to the building of a new taxiway airside.

In addition to the terminal expansion, the airport will also see the construction of a 250-room hotel and a parkade with capacity for 1,100 vehicles. The growth of the airport is anticipated to have a significant impact on the entire region, providing enhanced transportation options and accessibility for individuals. Mayor Tom Dyas also notes that the project has the potential to stimulate economic development in the community. Phase one is slated for completion by 2026, with phase two, an expansion of the arrivals area, scheduled to begin after 2030.

Overall, the airport is anticipating a record-breaking 2.1 million passengers this year, highlighting the need for expansion to meet the growing demand. The construction project is divided into four phases over the next 15 years, with the city emphasizing that the work is long overdue. The goal of the project is to create a more streamlined and modern airport experience for travelers, with improved facilities and amenities. The increased capacity and infrastructure upgrades are expected to not only benefit passengers but also contribute to the economic growth of the region.

As the construction progresses, the airport is focused on minimizing disruptions to travelers while creating a more efficient and comfortable environment. The enhancements to the airport facilities, including the expansion of the terminal and the addition of a hotel and parkade, are viewed as important steps in meeting the needs of the growing number of passengers. The overall growth of the airport is seen as a positive development for the community, providing opportunities for economic development and improving accessibility for residents and visitors. Despite the temporary inconveniences caused by the construction, the long-term benefits of the project are expected to have a lasting and positive impact on the region.
