Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas spoke at a judicial conference in Alabama, where he addressed the criticism he has faced and described Washington as a “hideous place.” He pushed back against the “nastiness” and “lies” directed at him, stating that people in Washington can do as much harm to one’s reputation as physical harm. Thomas emphasized that he is simply doing his job and does not see himself as courageous, especially when compared to servicemembers and first responders.

Thomas argued that it would be a disservice to soldiers and first responders if he did not make decisions with a lifetime appointment that he believes are the right decisions. Despite not directly addressing ongoing reports about ethics issues plaguing him, he repeatedly discussed his critics without being prompted, expressing frustration at the negativity he and his wife have faced in recent years. Criticism has stemmed from his wife’s involvement in attempts to reverse the 2020 presidential election in favor of former President Donald Trump.

Concerns have also arisen around Thomas accepting private jet travel and vacations from Republican megadonor Harlan Crow, prompting him to update his financial disclosure forms and the Supreme Court to adopt a code of conduct last year. Thomas has faced calls for recusal from cases involving the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack due to his wife’s attendance at Trump’s rally before the incident. However, Thomas has declined to recuse himself from such cases, including one involving Trump’s claims of absolute immunity from criminal charges related to overturning election results.

During his remarks, Thomas also criticized Washington, DC, highlighting the negativity that he believes people in the area take pride in. He mentioned that people in Washington often pride themselves in being awful, describing the city as “hideous.” Despite eliciting some laughter with his comments, Thomas expressed a preference for visiting places where people do not pride themselves in doing harmful things simply because they have the capacity to do so. He reflected on the changes he has seen in Washington and his frustrations with how he and his friends have been attacked.

In discussing the challenges he faces in Washington, Thomas recounted a walk he took with a friend before the attacks on his friends began. He expressed a hope that he still has some friends remaining amid the criticisms he has faced. Throughout his remarks, Thomas emphasized the importance of remaining steadfast in his role as a Supreme Court justice and making decisions that he believes are right. Despite the adversity he has encountered, Thomas remains determined to fulfill his responsibilities and continue serving on the Court.
