Throughout his career with Dirty Three, White has developed new techniques and patterns through open-ended improvisation, combining mathematical precision with emotional expression. Despite the opportunity to work with childhood idols such as Lou Reed and Neil Young, White has instead opted to collaborate with singer-songwriters like Cat Power and Will Oldham, whose voices resonate with him. He has never been content with just keeping the beat, always seeking to add depth and complexity to his drumming to enhance the song’s narrative and emotional impact.
In the midst of the pandemic in 2020, White found himself back in Australia to care for his ailing father, where he recorded his first solo album, “All Hits: Memories.” The album showcases White’s versatility, branching out from percussion to experiment with keyboards and other instruments. The collaborative process with former Fugazi guitarist Guy Picciotto allowed White to explore new sounds and ideas, resulting in a diverse collection of tracks that reflect his bold approach to musical experimentation. Despite his lack of interest in the technical aspects of recording, White enjoyed the process of becoming an engineering autodidact and expanding his musical horizons.
White’s dedication to his music extends to his beloved snare drum, which he once lost on tour in Portugal, only to recover it after an extensive search. The sentimental value of his drum is undeniable, as he has turned down offers to trade or sell it despite its worn appearance. White’s devotion to his instrument reflects his commitment to his craft and his unique sound, which remains a constant presence in his music. His passion for music and collaboration continues to drive him forward, as he explores new possibilities and pushes the boundaries of his creativity with each project he undertakes.
