Jeep has introduced its first fully electric SUV for the North American market, the Wagoneer S. The company already offers an electric model in Europe, but the Wagoneer S will be available in the US and Canada later this year before expanding to other markets. The new SUV reflects Jeep parent company Stellantis’s flexible strategy towards electric vehicle development, with the ability to pivot quickly between gas-powered, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric models to meet market demand.

Jeep’s chief executive, Antonio Filosa, hinted at the possibility of future plug-in hybrid versions of the Wagoneer S, similar to the Ram Ramcharger pickup, if there is customer demand. The Wagoneer S will feature a sleek and aerodynamic design, with up to 600 horsepower from two electric motors and a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.4 seconds. It will also have a range of over 300 miles on a fully charged battery pack before needing to recharge.

While Jeep is known for its off-road capabilities, the Wagoneer S was not specifically marketed for off-road use. However, a concept version called the Wagoneer S Trailhawk with off-road tires and raised suspension was revealed alongside the production model. Jeep also plans to release a rugged off-road EV called the Recon early next year. In response to environmental concerns, the Wagoneer S will not have wood, leather, or chrome decorations. Instead, it will use synthetic materials that mimic leather and gradually phase out chrome due to environmental concerns.

The vehicle will feature a signature lighting grille that illuminates the path to the SUV at night and offers five drive modes – Auto, Sport, Eco, Snow, and Sand – that adjust power output and traction control settings. The Wagoneer S is set to launch later this year with a starting price of around $72,000 for the “Launch Edition” models, with more affordable and premium versions potentially available in the future. Stellantis plans to transition away from chrome in its vehicle designs over time due to environmental considerations related to hexavalent chrome production.

Overall, the Wagoneer S represents Jeep’s entry into the fully electric SUV market in North America and reflects Stellantis’s commitment to developing a range of electric vehicle options to meet changing customer preferences and regulatory requirements. With its sleek design, high performance, and advanced features, the Wagoneer S aims to appeal to customers looking for a premium electric SUV option with the power and capability synonymous with the Jeep brand.
