The pin represents so much more than just an award for me. It symbolizes the recognition of my work and the impact I’ve had on the Canadian community. It’s a reminder of my journey and the challenges I’ve overcome, and serves as a source of inspiration and motivation for me to continue making a difference. It holds a special place in my heart and I wear it proudly as a symbol of resilience, strength, and perseverance. I believe that style is not just about the clothes we wear, but also about the stories and memories they hold, and the emotions they evoke.

Throughout my breast cancer journey, I found solace and strength in wearing hats. They became more than just a fashion accessory—they became emblematic of my resilience and determination to overcome the challenges that came my way. From a red wig that didn’t feel authentic to the beautiful caps gifted to me by loved ones, each hat represented a part of my journey and helped me feel good about myself. Although I haven’t worn them as frequently since finishing chemo, they still hold a special place in my heart as symbols of the strength and courage I exhibited during that difficult time.

The loss of my silver Elsa Peretti Tiffany & Co. cuff during one of my chemo appointments was a turning point in my perspective. Initially devastated by the loss, I eventually realized that the cuff no longer held the same significance for me. It had served its purpose in empowering me through my cancer treatment, and now it may be empowering someone else who needs it more. This experience taught me the power of perception and how we can choose to see situations in a positive light, finding strength and empowerment in unexpected places.

The pin I received when being honored with the Order of Canada in 2013 has become a cherished closet staple for me. It represents not just an award, but a recognition of my work and the impact I’ve had on my community. It serves as a reminder of my journey, the challenges I’ve overcome, and the strength and resilience I exhibited during difficult times. I wear it proudly as a symbol of inspiration and motivation to continue making a difference and serving as a source of empowerment for others.

Style, for me, is not just about the clothes we wear, but about the stories and memories they hold and the emotions they evoke. Each piece in our wardrobe tells a unique story and represents different chapters of our lives. Whether it’s a hat that symbolizes strength and resilience, a lost bracelet that signifies empowerment, or an honor pin that represents recognition and achievement, our style choices can be deeply intertwined with our personal journeys and experiences. It’s through these pieces that we can find inspiration, courage, and a sense of identity that reflects who we are and the challenges we’ve overcome.
