The Baltimore Orioles have signed veteran second baseman-left fielder Tony Kemp to a major league contract reportedly worth $1 million, just one week after he was released from a minor league deal with the Cincinnati Reds. Orioles general manager Mike Elias stated that he would remain “nimble” when it came to adding to the roster in the days leading up to Opening Day. Kemp, aged 32, has played in parts of eight major league seasons and spent the last three seasons in Oakland. The move to sign Kemp is particularly interesting given that the Orioles had veteran Kolten Wong and top prospect Jackson Holliday in camp, both left-handed batters.

Kemp’s signing fills a roster spot that required the Orioles to designate utilityman Nick Maton for assignment. Maton struggled in spring training, going 0-for-23, and was not expected to make the team. Kemp, on the other hand, performed well during spring training with the Reds, posting a slash line of .333/.391/.619 in eight Cactus League games. The move to bring in Kemp was likely influenced by Elias’ familiarity with Kemp and his skill set from their time together with the Astros, where Elias was the scouting director.

Kemp’s career statistics include a combined slash line of .238/.325/.352 with 87 doubles, 15 triples, and 35 home runs. He has also scored 261 runs, driven in 184 RBI, and stolen 53 bases over parts of eight major league seasons. Kemp has experience playing multiple positions, primarily second base and left field, and is known for his versatility on the field. The signing of Kemp gives the Orioles added depth and experience as they prepare for the upcoming season.

The Orioles’ decision to go with Kemp over other options in camp, such as Wong and Holliday, may have been influenced by Kemp’s leadership and experience. Kemp has compared the Orioles’ young core to the Astros’ group that he played with from 2016-2019, reminiscing about the times they went to the playoffs and won championships. His presence in the clubhouse may provide valuable leadership and mentorship to the younger players on the team.

With the addition of Kemp, the Orioles now have a full 40-man roster. Kemp’s signing provides the team with a versatile player who can contribute at multiple positions and bring a veteran presence to a young roster. As the Orioles look to rebuild and develop their young talent, Kemp’s experience and leadership qualities could prove to be valuable assets both on and off the field. The move to sign Kemp demonstrates the team’s commitment to improving and strengthening their roster as they prepare for the upcoming season.
