Iran’s recent missile and drone barrage targeting Israel is being compared to Russian tactics used in frequent strikes on Ukraine, as Iran launched its first-ever strike from its own territory into Israel. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) stated that Iran is learning from the Russians in developing dangerous and effective strike packages against Israel, similar to how Russia has employed thousands of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine in a prolonged conflict. Russia has used a variety of missiles and drones, including Iranian-designed drones, in attempts to penetrate Western air and missile defenses.

The large-scale aerial attack on Israel by Iran was in retaliation for an attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria on April 1, resulting in casualties among Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Tehran described the attack as a self-defense measure against Israel’s military aggressions. The attack included 170 explosive drones, 30 cruise missiles, and over 120 ballistic missiles fired towards Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported a small number of hits, with minor damage to a military base in southern Israel. The U.S. intercepted dozens of missiles and drones heading towards Israel from Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, demonstrating strong defense support for Israel.

The U.S. has provided air defense capabilities to both Israel and Ukraine, with Kyiv struggling to defend its territory against sustained Russian missile and drone attacks. Russia has targeted Ukraine’s energy and military infrastructure consistently throughout the conflict. Germany announced plans to transfer an additional Patriot system to Ukraine, known for intercepting advanced missiles, highlighting international support for Ukraine’s defense. Ukraine reported further attacks from Russia, including kamikaze drones and anti-aircraft guided missiles launched overnight.

Iran’s strikes on Israel provide Tehran with opportunities to assess different attack strategies and improve its ability to evade and overwhelm U.S. air and maritime defenses. The U.S. military has deployed resources to help intercept incoming threats and support allies facing aggression. The ongoing conflict in the region highlights the complexity and challenges of modern warfare with the use of advanced missile and drone technology by multiple actors. The international community continues to monitor and respond to escalating tensions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
