Shalom Shitrit, an IDF soldier who survived a terror attack on Israel on October 7, spoke to over 1,200 people in Connecticut, sharing his story of pain, loss, and hope. After nearly losing his life and losing his leg in the attack, Shitrit shared how the experience strengthened his faith and led him back to observing Shabbat. He described the events of that fateful day when Hamas terrorists attacked the agricultural community of Kibbutz Be’eri, killing many residents, including those who dedicated their lives to helping Palestinians.
Shitrit recounted the events of the attack, where he faced terrorists, was shot in the leg, and witnessed the deaths of many of his fellow soldiers. The attack resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people in Israel, with Kibbutz Be’eri being one of the hardest-hit areas. Shitrit and his friend Sagiv Cohen managed to survive by hiding under an army vehicle, ultimately escaping with the help of an armed vehicle that arrived on the scene. Shitrit underwent multiple surgeries, including the amputation of his leg, and experienced symptoms of PTSD following the attack.
Following his rehabilitation, Shitrit has joined a treatment center for wounded IDF soldiers associated with the non-profit organization Belev Echad. The center provides physical, spiritual, and psychological support for wounded soldiers, including therapies and activities aimed at aiding their recovery. Shitrit also started an initiative called Kamim Mehadash, which involves providing soldiers with bags of necessities and speaking to other survivors to inspire and uplift them. Shitrit emphasized the importance of unity among the Jewish people, especially in light of the divisions in Israel before the attack.
Shitrit’s speeches have impacted audiences in the U.S., where he has shared his story and emphasized the importance of supporting Israel and the Jewish people. He expressed gratitude for American support for Israel and the volunteers who visit the country, stating that it is heartwarming and inspiring. Shitrit’s message of unity and resilience in the face of tragedy has resonated with many, inspiring them to come together and support one another during difficult times. Through his experiences, Shitrit has found hope and strength, despite the challenges he has faced.
