The escalating conflict between Israel and various militant groups has left many travellers wondering about the safety of visiting nearby countries like Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan. Lebanon has experienced a deadly attack by Israel, resulting in the deaths of at least 700 people and prompting the UK and EU governments to advise against all travel to the region. Striking near the boundary with Israel, the bombings have created a dangerous situation with ongoing mortar and artillery exchanges. The British embassy is limited in the assistance it can provide and travellers are urged to leave immediately. Similar travel warnings have been issued by Australia, the US, Ireland, and France.

Egypt, located near Israel and Gaza, has not yet been directly involved in the conflict but there are still areas that are considered risky for tourists. The UK Foreign Office advises against travel in certain parts of the country such as areas near the Egypt-Libya border, North Sinai Governorate, and parts of the South Sinai Governorate. However, major cities like Cairo, Alexandria, and Luxor remain far from the conflict zone. The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs also urges a high degree of caution when travelling to Egypt, particularly advising against travel to North Sinai and Gaza via the Rafah border crossing.

Jordan, which shares borders with Israel, the West Bank, and Syria, is another destination that travellers are questioning the safety of visiting. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel within 3km of Jordan’s border with Syria and warns of a high risk of terrorism in the country. Most tourist destinations in Jordan have not been affected by the conflict but some flights to Amman and Aqaba airports have been disrupted. Travellers with package holidays booked may not receive a refund if they choose to cancel, unless the destination falls into one of the Foreign Office’s no-go areas.

Despite the escalating conflict in the region, the Jordan Tourism Board has emphasized that Jordan remains a safe and welcoming destination for tourists around the world. Borders to the country remain open, with the focus on ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all visitors. While the situation is unstable in some areas, many tourist destinations in Jordan have not been affected and are open to visitors. However, airlines like Wizz Air, Austrian Airlines, and United have suspended or cancelled flights to Jordan due to the escalating situation in the region.

Travellers considering a trip to these countries should closely monitor guidance from their government’s foreign offices and be prepared for potential disruptions in travel plans. The situation in the region remains fluid and can escalate quickly, affecting exit routes and transport options. Tourists are urged to exercise caution and consider the risks before deciding to travel to Lebanon, Egypt, or Jordan. Being informed and staying updated on travel advisories can help ensure the safety and security of travellers during these uncertain times.
