Black Americans are accusing conservatives of co-opting the term “DEI” as a racial slur following a tragic bridge collapse in Baltimore. The collapse was caused by a cargo ship losing control and striking one of the bridge’s supports, resulting in the loss of lives of construction workers. Right-wing activists have frequently targeted DEI programs, with Republican lawmakers introducing bills aimed at limiting DEI initiatives in public institutions. Some critics also targeted Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, who is Black, suggesting that he was a diversity hire, despite his election with substantial support.

Mayor Scott has responded to these attacks, asserting that critics are essentially using “DEI” as a euphemism for the n-word. He emphasized that Black men, particularly young Black men, have historically been marginalized and portrayed negatively by racists. Scott believes that his position poses a threat to those who are comfortable with discriminatory ideologies and systems, as his presence challenges their privilege and power. Other conservative figures, such as Florida congressional candidate Anthony Sabatini and Utah State Representative Phil Lyman, also tried to shift blame to DEI initiatives for the bridge collapse, with some resorting to racist language and attitudes.

Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, condemned the notion that a diverse workforce is less competent than an all-white workforce as inherently racist and disrespectful. He highlighted the success of diversity, equity, and inclusion policies in fostering innovative and dynamic organizations, refuting the attempts by politicians to exploit tragedies like the bridge collapse to foster resentment. Prominent Black individuals, including politicians and journalists, have taken to social media to denounce the use of “DEI” as a racial slur, pointing out the underlying racism and ignorance behind such language.

The backlash against DEI initiatives and individuals like Mayor Scott underscores the ongoing struggle for racial equity and justice in the United States. Black Americans continue to face systemic discrimination and racism, with their achievements and abilities being questioned and undermined. The weaponization of terms like “DEI” as racial slurs reflects a deeper issue of entrenched bigotry and prejudice in society. Efforts to combat racism, promote diversity, and ensure inclusion must continue, despite the resistance and backlash from those seeking to maintain oppressive systems of power and privilege. It is crucial for individuals and institutions to actively challenge and dismantle racism in all its forms.
