Investigators in the superyacht sinking off the coast of Sicily are considering manslaughter charges in the case. The public prosecutor’s office of Termini Imerese in Sicily is investigating possible negligence on the part of the crew of the yacht when it was hit by storms while anchored. The body of Hannah Lynch, daughter of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, was recovered following the tragedy. She was the final person who had been unaccounted for. The Lynch family was aboard the 184-foot British-flagged yacht, named Bayesian, when it sank after capsizing in winds as high as 100 mph. The yacht had 22 people on board, with 15 surviving the sinking, including Lynch’s wife.

The survivors, including the captain, have been interviewed by the Italian Coast Guard as part of the investigation. Although no one is formally under investigation yet, possible charges being considered include negligent shipwreck and multiple homicide. The yacht was built by The Italian Sea Group, whose CEO blamed the shipwreck on errors made by the crew and ruled out any design or construction failings. Those who died in the tragedy include tech billionaire Mike Lynch, American lawyer Christopher Morvillo, Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer, and onboard chef Recaldo Thomas. A nearby sailboat rescued 15 people, including a 1-year-old girl, from the sinking yacht.

The Lynch family, devastated by the tragedy, is being comforted and supported by family and friends. They expressed gratitude to the Italian coastguard, emergency services, and all those who assisted in the rescue efforts. Investigators are working to understand why the yacht sank so quickly, with the CEO of the shipbuilding company suggesting that the boat went down due to taking on water. The Italian Coast Guard is expected to hold a press conference to provide updates on the investigation. The Italian Sea Group, responsible for building the yacht, has denied any design or construction faults, attributing the accident to crew errors.

Divers had been searching the hull of the Bayesian, which now rests on the seabed 164 feet underwater, for the missing individuals. The ship was believed to have been struck by a waterspout, a tornado over the water, near the port of Porticello where it was anchored before sinking rapidly. The tragic incident claimed the lives of several individuals who were on board for various reasons, including celebrating Lynch’s acquittal on fraud charges. The investigation into the superyacht sinking aims to determine the exact causes of the disaster, potentially leading to manslaughter charges against those found responsible for negligence that contributed to the tragic outcome.

Efforts are ongoing to piece together the events leading up to the sinking of the Bayesian and to determine the responsibilities of the crew and others involved. The devastation caused by the loss of life in the superyacht disaster has left the Lynch family and others affected in shock and mourning. The recovery of the final missing person’s body marked a somber moment in the aftermath of the tragedy, shedding light on the need for accountability and justice in the face of such a catastrophic event. The investigation is likely to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the yacht sinking and provide closure to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the incident.
