The City of Saskatoon is hosting two public information sessions in early June to discuss the Housing Accelerator Fund. These sessions will provide an opportunity for the public to ask questions and learn more about the upcoming changes. Some of the key topics that will be covered include permitting up to four dwelling units on all residential sites, permitting multiple-unit residential development near bus rapid transit stations, streamlining approvals for residential care homes, and removing minimum parking requirements city-wide. Amendments related to these topics will be brought forward to a public hearing at city council in June, except for the parking requirements amendment, which will be discussed in July.

Discussions regarding the Housing Accelerator Fund have been ongoing since the federal government announced the funding in February. The government of Canada, in partnership with the City of Saskatoon, revealed that 940 housing units will be fast-tracked in the city over the next three years. A total of $41.3 million is being allocated towards this initiative, with a focus on accelerating housing development in areas close to transit and the downtown sector. The federal government has stated that the fund aims to fast-track the construction of at least 100,000 homes across the country over three years, ultimately resulting in the creation of nearly 650,000 homes in Canada over the next decade.

The public information sessions will take place on June 4 at the Saskatchewan Polytechnic cafeteria and on June 6 at the Saskatoon Fieldhouse. These sessions are part of the city’s effort to engage with residents and gather feedback on the proposed changes related to housing development and urban planning.
