Colin Jost, best known for his work on “Saturday Night Live,” shared updates with fans about his injured foot while covering Olympic surfing for NBC in Tahiti. He posted a photo of his left foot with three bandaged toes, joking that he had visited the Olympic medical tent more than the athletes. Jost revealed he injured his foot on coral shortly after arriving in Tahiti, causing scrapes and a staph infection. The injury occurred while he was attempting to surf, but unfortunately, he stood on the coral reef and got scraped up.

Jost mentioned in interviews with NBC Sports’ Mike Tirico and NBC Olympics Late Night host Maria Taylor that he is being closely monitored by local medical staff. Despite joking about his injury, he also mentioned that the infection has not improved, prompting medical attention. Staph infections, caused by Staphylococcus aureus, can be serious if left untreated. Jost joked about the situation, saying it was like a chicken pecking at a staph infection in his foot.

Injuries from coral can lead to inflammation or infection and may take weeks or even months to fully heal, according to Divers Alert Network. Jost has not disclosed the specific type of coral that caused his injury. Prior to heading to the Olympics, Jost joked about the potential for injuries, mentioning how his health insurance through the Writers Guild was excited to see what the coral reef would do to him. Despite the injury, Jost expressed excitement about the opportunity to watch and report on the best surfers in the world competing on challenging waves.

Jost has been covering the Olympic surfing competition in the coastal village of Teahupo’o in Tahiti, part of French Polynesia. The surfing events began on July 27 with both men’s and women’s rounds, but were postponed for a day due to unfavorable surfing conditions. Jost’s injury adds an unexpected twist to his coverage of the event, with fans eagerly awaiting updates on his recovery. As a seasoned surfer himself, Jost’s injury serves as a reminder of the risks involved in water sports and the importance of taking precautions while enjoying the ocean.
