Former President Trump has announced that he will testify at his upcoming hush money trial in New York City, stating that he will tell the truth as there is no case against him. The trial, which is related to accusations of falsifying business records to cover up a payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election, is scheduled to begin on Monday. Trump has referred to the trial as a “scam” and a “witch hunt” and has pleaded not guilty to all counts. Trump’s legal team has also filed a motion requesting the recusal of Manhattan Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over the trial, due to his alleged hostility towards the former president.

During a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, Trump made the announcement about his testimony alongside Speaker Mike Johnson, who was in Palm Beach to introduce a legislative package aimed at bolstering election integrity. Trump criticized the trial, calling it “incredible” election interference. He emphasized that the country has never seen such behavior and called for it to stop, comparing it to that of a third-world country. Despite the upcoming trial, Trump is also preparing to challenge President Biden for another White House term later this year, with plans to crackdown on voter fraud by requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to be able to vote.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged Trump with 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, alleging that the former president repeatedly and fraudulently falsified New York business records to conceal criminal conduct during the 2016 presidential election. The charges are related to hush money payments made during Trump’s campaign. Trump’s trial is the first of the election year for the 2024 presumptive Republican presidential nominee. The White House has responded to Republican-led efforts to combat voter fraud, dismissing the proposals as redundant since noncitizens are already barred from voting in federal elections.

Trump’s legal team has raised concerns about the impartiality of Judge Merchan due to his daughter’s Democrat-affiliated political work and his alleged bias against the former president. The motion to recuse the judge has added to the ongoing tensions surrounding the trial. Trump has remained defiant in the face of legal challenges, maintaining his innocence and vowing to tell the truth during his testimony. As the trial approaches, the political landscape is becoming increasingly charged, with Trump gearing up for another potential White House bid and the Biden administration facing criticism over its handling of border security amidst the ongoing crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.
