An attack by a mountain lion occurred in a remote area of Northern California’s foothills in which a 21-year-old man was killed and his 18-year-old brother was injured while hunting for shed antlers. The younger brother contacted the sheriff’s office to report the attack and his brother being missing. Deputies arrived at the scene to find the younger brother injured and the mountain lion crouched over the deceased older brother. The deputies fired their service weapons to scare off the mountain lion, allowing them to reach the older brother who was unfortunately already deceased.

Wardens and trappers from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, along with El Dorado County Trapper, responded to the scene and located the mountain lion responsible for the attack. The large cat was euthanized by authorities. The identities of the two brothers have not been publicly disclosed, and there were no immediate updates on the condition of the surviving brother. Georgetown, where the attack occurred, is a historic town with a population of over 2,000, situated around 50 miles northeast of Sacramento.

This attack is one of nearly two dozen reported mountain lion attacks on humans since the mid-80s, as documented by the fish and wildlife department. However, the last fatal encounter with a mountain lion was in 2004 in Orange County. Mountain lion attacks on humans are rare but can be dangerous, especially in remote areas where help may not be immediately available. The incident in Northern California highlights the importance of being cautious while exploring natural areas where wildlife, including predators like mountain lions, may be present.

The tragic event serves as a reminder of the risks associated with outdoor activities, particularly in wild areas where encounters with potentially dangerous wildlife can occur. Authorities acted swiftly to respond to the attack and ensure the safety of the surviving brother and others in the area. The decision to euthanize the mountain lion responsible for the attack was made to prevent further harm to humans and to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As the investigation into the attack continues, authorities will likely review the circumstances leading up to the tragic event and assess any measures that can be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The incident underscores the importance of wildlife management and public awareness to minimize potential encounters between humans and mountain lions in areas where both species coexist. While mountain lion attacks are rare, they can be deadly, so it is crucial for individuals exploring wild areas to remain vigilant and take precautions to protect themselves and others from potential threats.
