In this stunning image from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, a trio of dazzling stars shines from within a reflection nebula, resembling a glittering cosmic geode. The triple-star system, known as HP Tau, HP Tau G2, and HP Tau G3, is composed of a T Tauri star called HP Tau. T Tauri stars are young variable stars that have not yet initiated nuclear fusion but are evolving into hydrogen-fueled stars like our Sun. These stars are typically less than 10 million years old and are commonly found enveloped in the dust and gas from which they formed.

HP Tau, like all variable stars, experiences fluctuations in brightness over time. The variations in brightness can be both periodic and random, with the random changes possibly attributed to the turbulent nature of a developing young star. These fluctuations may result from instabilities in the dust and gas accretion disk surrounding the star, material from the disk falling onto the star and being consumed, and flares on the star’s surface. The periodic changes in brightness could be caused by giant sunspots rotating in and out of view.

The stars are surrounded by a cloud of gas and dust that glows with their reflected light, creating a reflection nebula. Unlike other nebulae that emit visible light, reflection nebulae shine as the light from nearby stars reflects off the surrounding gas and dust, similar to how fog is illuminated by a car’s headlights. This phenomenon adds to the majestic and ethereal beauty of the trio of stars within the nebula.

HP Tau is situated approximately 550 light-years away in the constellation Taurus. The Hubble Space Telescope focused on studying HP Tau as part of a broader investigation into protoplanetary disks, which are the disks of material that encircle stars and eventually give rise to planets over millions of years. By studying HP Tau and its surrounding environment, scientists gain insights into the processes involved in planet formation and the evolution of young stars like T Tauri stars.
