Hualien County, located on Taiwan’s east coast, is a picturesque tourist destination known for its stunning gorge and aquamarine waters, but it is also prone to earthquakes due to its location on active faults. With a population of about 300,000, a third of whom reside in the coastal city of Hualien, the county is one of the least densely populated areas in Taiwan. Situated about three hours by train from Taipei, it is often referred to as the first place in Taiwan to be touched by the sun.

The highlight of Hualien County is Taroko National Park, a popular scenic area known for the Taroko Gorge, a marble canyon formed by the Liwu River cutting through steep mountains. The city of Hualien serves as a gateway to the national park, attracting tourists who come to explore its natural beauty. However, the region’s susceptibility to earthquakes poses a risk to visitors, as evidenced by an incident where three hikers were trapped on a trail near the gorge entrance during a recent earthquake, resulting in two fatalities.

Earthquakes have had a significant impact on Hualien, with a deadly magnitude 6.5 quake in 2018 claiming 17 lives and injuring hundreds of others. The epicenter of the earthquake was near the city of Hualien, causing widespread destruction, including a 12-story building that was severely tilted with the first four floors crushed. The following year, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the area, causing injuries to 17 people. These incidents highlight the constant threat of earthquakes in the region, necessitating precautionary measures for residents and visitors alike.

Despite the seismic activity, Hualien County remains an important cultural hub in Taiwan, with a significant concentration of the island’s Indigenous tribes residing in the area. Several tribes call the county home, adding to the region’s rich cultural diversity and heritage. The county’s unique blend of natural beauty, cultural significance, and historical importance makes it a fascinating destination worth exploring, despite the risk of earthquakes. As efforts continue to enhance safety measures and earthquake preparedness in Hualien, visitors are encouraged to appreciate the county’s attractions while remaining vigilant and informed about potential risks.
