An Arizona family reunion took a turn for the worse when 13 people, including three children, had to be rescued from a hiking trail in Scottsdale due to extreme heat. The group of hikers, in town for the reunion, started their hike on the Gateway Loop Trail at 7:30 a.m. as temperatures soared to 108 degrees, prompting an excessive heat warning for the area.
After getting lost, running out of water, and calling for assistance, the Scottsdale Fire Department sent over 65 firefighters for a mountain rescue less than three hours later. The family was eventually located off the trail in a wash under a tree several miles into the trail. A 10-year-old child was treated and taken to a local hospital for evaluation, while two toddlers, both 1 year old, were also brought to a hospital with symptoms of heat exhaustion.
The child who was taken to the hospital was reported to be in good condition by Friday evening, as per Scottsdale Fire Capt. Dave Folio. Crews utilized a “big-wheel” stretcher to remove a woman from the trail, and all those who were rescued were expected to survive. The incident served as a reminder of the dangers of hiking in extreme heat, as even experienced hikers can quickly find themselves in dangerous situations if unprepared.
