Hoda Kotb shared the story of injuring her toe while running into a subway car in New York City on the set of “TODAY With Hoda and Jenna.” She explained how she jammed her toe but continued on with her day due to the adrenaline rush. When she returned home, she tried taping her toe with Scotch tape since she couldn’t find any other type of tape or a first aid kit. Her co-host, Jenna Bush Hager, was shocked by her choice of taping method and questioned whether Scotch tape was suitable for the job. Despite Jenna’s doubts, Hoda proceeded to tape her injured toe, following instructions she found online on how to apply the tape properly.

To treat a stubbed toe, the Cleveland Clinic recommends massaging the injured area immediately after the injury to increase blood flow and reduce pain. Over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can also be taken for pain relief. The clinic suggests using the RICE method – rest, ice, compression, and elevation – to help with the healing process. Resting the toe and staying off your feet is essential, as is applying ice or a cold compress every 20 minutes to reduce pain and inflammation. Wrapping the foot in an elastic bandage for compression and keeping the toe elevated above the heart while resting can also aid in reducing swelling.

When it comes to taping a stubbed toe, the Cleveland Clinic recommends buddy taping, which involves taping two toes together for support. Using athletic tape, you can hold the injured toe and the toe next to it together and wrap tape around both to help with healing. However, the clinic advises seeing a healthcare provider if you suspect a broken toe before attempting to tape it. While Hoda resorted to using Scotch tape in her impromptu taping session, medical professionals recommend using proper athletic tape or adhesive bandages specifically designed for injuries to prevent complications and ensure effective healing.

Hoda’s use of Scotch tape on her injured toe may have been unconventional, but it highlights the creative and resourceful ways people try to address minor injuries when they lack proper medical supplies. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of having a well-equipped first aid kit at home for such occasions. While Hoda’s toe eventually healed, following medical advice from professionals like the Cleveland Clinic can help ensure a speedier and more effective recovery from injuries like stubbed toes. Proper treatment methods like the RICE method and buddy taping can aid in reducing pain, inflammation, and swelling in the injured toe, promoting overall healing and comfort for the individual.
