A deadly flash flood surged through Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park last month, leaving more than 100 hikers stranded. Whitnye Raquel, a Texas hiker, described the experience as the “craziest day of their lives.” The flood occurred after steady rain on Aug. 22 caused the creek to swell and water to dislodge rocks and boulders, resulting in a dangerous situation for everyone in the area. Raquel and her friend Paige Renae sought shelter in the Havasupai Reservation village, where they were informed that the trail was now impossible due to blocked paths and boulders, and helicopter evacuation would be necessary the next morning.
With wooden bridges and ladders along the trail wiped out by the flash flood, hiking out of the area was no longer an option for the stranded hikers. The Havasupai tribal members provided shelter in their village’s school cafeteria, where all the hikers worked together to help each other through the ordeal. A private helicopter service and an Arizona National Guard Blackhawk helicopter were called in to evacuate the 104 individuals stranded in the canyon. Unfortunately, a husband and wife, Andrew and Chenoa Nickerson, were swept away in the rush of water near Havasu Creek’s confluence with the Colorado River.
While Andrew Nickerson was rescued by a group rafting the river that night, his wife, Chenoa Nickerson, remained missing for days. She was eventually found by members of a commercial river trip floating in the Colorado River. Chenoa was not wearing a life jacket, a common occurrence among hikers in the area. Raquel spoke about the incident, emphasizing the sheer force of nature and how humans are no match for it. She recalled the event as a stark reminder of the power of mother nature and the importance of being prepared for such situations when exploring the outdoors.
