Riviere is a project that successfully blends a resort-like atmosphere with residential living, earning it a place on the shortlist for the 2024 Australian Interior Design Awards. From the hotel-inspired lobby to the rooftop garden, Riviere captures the essence of an urban resort. The awards, backed by the Design Institute of Australia, highlight interior design excellence in various sectors, showcasing projects from both established and emerging designers across the country. Another Brisbane project nominated in the Residential Design category is Birdwood House by Louise Walsh Interior Design, a modern interpretation of the traditional Queensland family home.
Birdwood House, situated in a state forest, reflects the strong and direct brief from the architect and client. The design exudes an artisan quality, setting it apart in Australian architecture. With a focus on elegance and sophistication, the house caters to the refined tastes of the clients, one of whom is a former stylist and art collector. The interiors feature unique elements such as polished concrete floors textured with real rocks, natural stone formations creating “crazy paving,” and custom lighting by local artist Susan Lincoln. The clients desired a discreet presence in the environment and sourced locally-made materials, including an impressive granite stone bench from South Australia, meticulously carved by an artisan over several months.
The 2024 Australian Interior Design Awards shortlist showcases a record-breaking 222 projects, highlighting a diverse range of design talent. Brisbane features prominently in the nominations, with projects like Wilson Architects’ Brisbane Grammar School STEAM Precinct, J.AR Office’s Gerard’s, Melissa Collinson Design’s The Wolf Dining & Bar, and BVN’s UQ Brisbane City among the contenders. Each project brings a unique perspective to interior design, pushing boundaries and demonstrating innovation in their respective categories. Riviere and Birdwood House stand out for their successful fusion of luxury resort living with bespoke residential design, capturing the attention of the judging panel for their exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.
