In Philadelphia, Robert Lindsey, owner of Sharp Skills Barber Shop, expressed concerns about Vice President Kamala Harris’s track record as a prosecutor and the lack of support for her among Black men. Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, has been conducting interviews with Black male journalists in an effort to improve her standing with this demographic. Despite polls showing potential gains for Republican Donald Trump among Black men, there is skepticism within the Democratic Party about the extent of this support. Harris herself acknowledged that she has more work to do to win over Black men’s votes.

Many Black operatives feel that the key to improving Harris’s standing with Black men lies in addressing issues related to economics and criminal justice reform. Rep. Gwen Moore highlighted Harris’s record as a prosecutor and her plans to support small businesses as important talking points to engage Black male voters. There is a consensus that the Democratic Party needs to do better in meeting the needs and expectations of Black men and addressing the ways in which they feel left out or marginalized.

Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of BlackPAC, emphasized that while there may not be a significant gender gap in terms of support for Democrats among Black voters, there is a growing trend towards identifying as independents rather than strong Democrats. The challenge lies in convincing Black voters, particularly Black men, of the importance of participating in the electoral process. Overall, there is a sense of cynicism and disillusionment among Black voters due to feelings of helplessness and disenchantment with local government.

The Democratic Party continues to grapple with how best to win back the support of Black men, with some advocating for a focus on criminal justice and police reform issues. The idea of highlighting Harris’s record on criminal justice reform as a way to win over Black men has been suggested, but Harris’s campaign has primarily focused on economic issues in her outreach efforts. With the upcoming election looming, there is a sense of urgency within the party to address the concerns and priorities of Black male voters in order to secure their support.

In light of these challenges, the National Center for Black Civic Participation has been working to engage Black men in Philadelphia through canvassing efforts and polling to better understand their perspectives on key issues. There is a recognition within the party that time is running out to effectively reach and mobilize Black male voters who may be feeling disillusioned and disenchanted with the political process. The focus remains on finding ways to address the specific concerns and needs of Black men in order to build support and enthusiasm for the Democratic Party and its candidates.
