Hamas officials have responded positively to the three-phase cease-fire proposal presented by Israel, stating their willingness to consider the deal with some potential amendments. The main focus of Hamas’ response is the need to prioritize the interests of the Palestinian people and to put an end to the ongoing aggression against Gaza. The proposed amendments would address issues such as confirming the cease-fire, withdrawing forces, focusing on reconstruction efforts, and potentially exchanging prisoners. This response comes amidst increased international pressure on Hamas to accept the proposal, following the United Nations Security Council’s vote to adopt the cease-fire plan.

The United States has also weighed in on the situation, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken urging Hamas to accept the proposal. The U.S. government views the response from Hamas as a positive step and is currently evaluating it. The White House National Security spokesperson John Kirby stated that they are in receipt of the reply that Hamas delivered to Qatar and Egypt, and are closely monitoring the situation to determine the next steps. President Joe Biden initially announced the three-phase plan at the end of May, emphasizing the need for an end to the conflict and the beginning of the reconstruction process in Gaza.

The first phase of the proposal involves a six-week period during which Israeli forces would withdraw from Gaza, negotiations between Israel and Hamas would take place to move towards phase two, and some hostages would be returned. Aid into Gaza would also be increased significantly. The second phase would signify a permanent cease-fire, while the third phase would focus on a major reconstruction plan for Gaza. However, Hamas and Israel have been unable to come to terms on a cease-fire agreement for months, with Hamas calling for a complete halt to fighting and Israel insisting on the destruction of Hamas. The ongoing conflict has resulted in a high death toll, with estimates of over 37,100 people dying in Gaza since October.

President Biden’s proposal has garnered support from various international bodies, including the United Nations Security Council, which voted to adopt the ceasefire plan. The Council’s decision has added to the pressure on Hamas to accept the deal and work towards a peaceful resolution with Israel. The response from Hamas indicates a willingness to engage in the process and potentially reach an agreement that would benefit the Palestinian people and bring much-needed relief to the region. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing discussions and evaluations taking place to determine the path forward in achieving a lasting cease-fire and beginning the reconstruction process in Gaza.
