Maryland Governor Wes Moore plans to meet with members of Congress to discuss support for rebuilding the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The bridge, which collapsed after being struck by a cargo ship, has blocked the main shipping channel at the port for nearly two weeks. The governor emphasized that this issue is not partisan, but a patriotic responsibility to support one of the country’s great economic engines. Moore also mentioned that the port is directly responsible for employing tens of thousands of people.
As the Maryland legislative session came to an end, a measure authorizing the use of the state’s rainy day fund to help port employees was approved and sent to the governor’s desk for signing. Moore planned to sign the emergency legislation to provide support for the workers affected by the tragedy. The bridge collapse occurred on March 26, resulting in the deaths of six workers from various countries, while two others survived. Efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining missing workers, with temporary channels cleared to allow limited access for certain vessels.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working to open a limited-access channel for barge container ships and other vessels by the end of April, with a goal to restore normal capacity at the port by the end of May. Governor Moore expressed optimism regarding the progress being made in reopening channels and clearing debris from the Patapsco River. Salvage divers and cranes are on site to assist with removing sections of the bridge and containers from the deck. Crews are also working to clear sections of the bridge lying across the ship’s bow to allow for its eventual movement.
The governor emphasized the state’s commitment to supporting the families of the workers affected by the bridge collapse and bringing them closure. Operations to recover the bodies of the victims and clear the waterway continue around the clock. Moore acknowledged the ambitious timeline for reopening channels and removing debris, noting the significant progress made in a short period of time. The Key Bridge Response Unified Command is coordinating efforts to remove obstacles in the waterway and facilitate the eventual movement of vessels through the port.
