On September 2, 1944, future President George H.W. Bush survived after his aircraft was shot down by enemy fire off the Japanese island of Chichijima. Lt. Junior Grade George Bush was the only survivor from Torpedo Squadron Fifty-One (VT-51) aboard the USS San Jacinto (CVL-30). Bush managed to release his bombs and bail out of his plane over the water after the engine caught fire. He parachuted safely into the water and paddled out to sea in an inflatable lifeboat. Rescued by the USS Finback, Bush later described this event as one of the most dramatic moments of his life.

After being rescued, Bush spent a month on the submarine, often standing the midnight-to-4 a.m. watch. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in action. This experience gave him a sobering understanding of war and peace and broadened his horizons. Despite the difficult circumstances, Bush maintained his composure and later became the 41st president of the United States. His words upon being rescued, “Happy to be aboard,” epitomize his resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

Born in Milton, Massachusetts, on June 12, 1924, Bush came from a family deeply involved in public service. He enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces on his 18th birthday and became the youngest pilot in the Navy upon receiving his wings. Before serving as vice president from 1981 to 1989 under Ronald Reagan, he flew 58 combat missions during World War II and held a number of senior-level positions, including U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

In January 1945, George H.W. Bush married Barbara Pierce, and they had six children together. George W. Bush, the 43rd president of the United States, served from 2001-2009. President Bush focused his energies on completing his education and raising a family, embodying the values of dedication and commitment to both his personal and professional life. Despite the challenges he faced during his time in the Navy and later in politics, Bush remained steadfast in his pursuit of service to his country.

President George H.W. Bush passed away on November 30, 2018, at the age of 94. His legacy as a public servant, veteran, and leader continues to inspire many. His willingness to sacrifice for his country and dedication to upholding the values of freedom and democracy serve as a testament to his character and commitment to making a difference. Through his actions and words, Bush left an indelible mark on American history and will be remembered for his contributions to the nation.
