Buc-ee’s, the gas station-country store with a dedicated fanbase, has opened its newest travel center in Luling, Texas, which now holds the record for the world’s largest gas station. The new location, just off I-10 about an hour east of San Antonio, spans over 75,000 square feet, surpassing the previous record holder by about 300 feet. The Luling store is replacing the chain’s first store, which was built in 2003.
The store’s mascot, Bucky the Beaver, is featured outside the new location in bronze. Stan Beard, the company’s director of real estate and development, expressed excitement about the opening of the world’s largest Buc-ee’s in Texas, especially since it is the store that started the brand. With over 200 staff members, the Luling store boasts more than 120 gas pumps and offers popular Buc-ee’s items like homemade fudge, Czech pastry kolaches, Beaver Nuggets corn puff snacks, and the renowned jerky, along with the chain’s signature immaculate restrooms.
Buc-ee’s, founded in Texas in 1982, has expanded rapidly in the South and Midwest, with 48 stores in 10 states. The chain is known not only for the size and offerings of its stores but also for its exceptionally clean bathrooms, which earned the establishment the title of “Best Restroom in America” in 2012. Buc-ee’s locations remain open 24/7, 365 days a year, catering to a wide range of customers.
The Luling store features a wall of jerky and has more than 100 gas pumps to accommodate drivers pulling off Interstate 10. Buc-ee’s does not allow 18-wheelers at its locations due to parking lot and driveway constraints, a policy that has garnered some criticism from truck drivers. However, this has not diminished the chain’s popularity with the general public, as seen by the large crowds and high sales figures at their stores.
