Frontier Airlines has announced that it will no longer charge customers a fee to change their flights, following in the footsteps of larger competitors. This decision comes as the Biden administration cracks down on “junk fees” in the airline industry. The budget airline is revamping its pricing model, which previously offered low base fares but charged fees for additional services such as seat assignments and cabin baggage. Instead, Frontier will now offer packages that include these add-ons, as well as options like early boarding.

While some fares will still allow travelers to customize their experience by adding on services individually, Frontier CEO Barry Biffle expects this to be the minority of customers. This new approach aligns with a recent rule issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation, requiring airlines to disclose all fees upfront, including those for checked and carry-on baggage. The DOT estimates that this change will save travelers over $500 million annually. Frontier currently charges up to $99 for flight changes made within a week of travel, a policy that sets it apart from competitors like Delta, American, and United, which eliminated change fees for many economy class tickets during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Biffle acknowledged that the absence of change fees at larger airlines made them more attractive to customers, as change fees were a major source of complaints. By removing this fee, Frontier aims to improve its competitive position in the industry and enhance the overall customer experience. Southwest Airlines has also long offered a no-change-fee policy, further pressuring Frontier to align with industry standards. Biffle emphasized that the decision to eliminate change fees was driven by customer feedback and a desire to better meet their needs.

In addition to eliminating change fees, Frontier’s pricing overhaul includes new package options that bundle popular add-ons like seat assignments and boarding privileges. These packages are expected to appeal to customers seeking a more convenient and streamlined booking process. While some travelers may still prefer to customize their experience by selecting individual services, Biffle believes that the majority will opt for the package offerings. This shift in pricing strategy reflects a broader trend in the airline industry towards simplifying fare structures and reducing hidden fees.

As airlines adapt to changing consumer preferences and regulatory requirements, the elimination of change fees has become a key differentiator in attracting and retaining customers.
