A recent study published in July 30, 2024, by Natalie Pennington and colleagues from Colorado State University suggests that American adults may have more friends than indicated by previous surveys. The ongoing “American Friendship Project” conducted by the researchers reveals that, on average, an American adult has around four or five friends. This number is consistent with data from the years 1970 to 2015, indicating that concerns about increasing friendlessness in American society may be inaccurate.

While the participants generally reported satisfaction with their friendships, many expressed a desire for closer relationships or more meaningful interactions with their friends. More than 75% of the participants reported being satisfied with the number of friends they had, but 42% felt that they were not as close to their friends as they would like to be. This highlights the importance of quality over quantity when it comes to friendships, as having more and higher quality friendships has been linked to greater happiness and life satisfaction.

The American Friendship Project also revealed that while participants primarily communicate with friends in person, phone calls and texting are also common methods of staying in touch. The study found that college students were more likely to meet new friends at school and tended to maintain friendships for shorter durations compared to the general adult population. This information provides valuable insights into how different demographics form and maintain friendships over time.

In addition to examining the number and quality of friendships among American adults, the researchers also evaluated the methodology and limitations of the American Friendship Project. They considered factors such as people’s varying definitions of what constitutes a “friend” and whether the friendships reported in surveys may be reciprocated by the other parties. Understanding these nuances is crucial for interpreting the data accurately and ensuring that the project continues to provide valuable insights into friendship and wellbeing in American society.

Overall, the American Friendship Project shows promise for shedding new light on the dynamics of friendships and their impact on wellbeing over time. By tracking changes in friendships and satisfaction levels, the project aims to inform efforts to increase and improve relationships among Americans. With the ongoing data collection and analysis, researchers hope to gain a better understanding of the factors that contribute to positive friendships and how they can be fostered and maintained for improved overall wellbeing in society.
