Several cities in southwest Florida broke daily high temperature records as the state experienced its first heatwave of the season. Tampa reached 97 degrees, breaking its previous record of 96 set in 2006. Records were also broken in Sarasota-Bradenton, Winter Haven, and Punta Gorda, which tied its record of 98 degrees. Brooksville tied its daily record at 97 degrees as well. The NWS described the situation as a “scorcher” as parts of southwest Florida approached temperatures near 100 degrees.

Over a dozen cities in Florida experienced record heat over the Memorial Day weekend, with daily highs recorded in Miami, Orlando, West Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. Melbourne in Central Florida experienced its second-warmest May temperature at 98 degrees. Fort Pierce also tied its warmest day of the month at 98. The NWS issued a hazardous weather outlook for various parts of Florida, warning of heat indexes of 100 to 105 degrees during the day and the possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening.

Forecasters predict scattered storms throughout the workweek, with the potential for gusty winds, lightning, and heavy downpours. The rip current risk is expected to increase over the east coast as onshore flow intensifies. Southern Texas also experienced temperatures exceeding 100 degrees over the weekend. Accuweather forecasters anticipate a dome of heat and drought building over Mexico to move northward, bringing triple-digit temperatures to the southwestern and south-central U.S. By next week, interior valleys of California could experience significant heat as the Mexico heat bubble moves into the region.
