The author recounts their experience of the 2006 Lebanon War, which began with the bombing of Rafic Hariri Airport in Beirut. Living near Hezbollah’s stronghold, they witnessed the attacks and had to evacuate the city to survive. Remembering the Lebanese Civil War from 1975 to 1990, the author’s mother was aware of the real threat to civilians in such conflicts. Leaving Beirut for Jbeil, the situation escalated with Israel’s airstrikes targeting various regions, leading to a realization that the entire nation was affected by the conflict.

To escape the violence, the author’s mother decided to drive the family to Amman, Jordan, where their father was working. The journey was perilous, passing through areas targeted by Israel, but they eventually reached safety. However, their concerns were still present as extended family members remained in Southern Lebanon, facing danger. Running low on fuel and facing challenges, including depleted gas reserves, they pressed on towards Jordan. Finally arriving in Amman, they were relieved to be safe and in familiar surroundings.

While in Amman, the author learned that their relatives had survived the violence in Lebanon, with a stroke of luck allowing them to return home before a deadly incident occurred. The family remained in Jordan until the ceasefire in August, when they returned to Lebanon to rebuild their lives. The aftermath of the war left Beirut in ruins, but the people were determined to move forward. However, the fear of future conflicts loomed over them, with the realization that their lives could be uprooted again at any moment.

After spending time trying to forget about the war, the author reflects on how Lebanon was never the same. The constant fear of future conflicts lingered, and sadly, those fears would later prove to be justified. Despite the challenges, the author remains committed to sharing their experiences and shedding light on the impact of war on individuals and communities. Through their writing and academic pursuits, they aim to challenge conventional wisdom and find connections in the search for common ground amidst conflict and chaos.
