The Satanic Temple in Massachusetts was the target of an explosive device found on its porch when no one was present. The device was not discovered until nearly 12 hours later by staff, and no injuries were reported. State police bomb technicians ensured the device was no longer a danger, with the help of police dogs and assistance from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force was also involved in the investigation, stating they were assisting police and had no further comment on the incident.

The incident is not the first time the temple has been targeted, as police have responded previously for bomb threats and hate crimes. In another incident in 2022, a man pleaded not guilty to arson, destruction of a place of worship, and civil rights violation charges after being accused of setting fire to the building. There have been other cases of hate crimes involving the Satanic Temple, such as a man being charged with destroying a statue of a pagan idol at Iowa’s state Capitol. The statue had been brought there by the Satanic Temple of Iowa under state rules allowing religious displays during the holidays.

Despite its name, the Satanic Temple does not actually believe in Satan and describes itself as a non-theistic religious organization that advocates for secularism. The organization was founded in 2013 and is based in Salem, Massachusetts. It is important to note that the Satanic Temple is separate from the Church of Satan, which was founded in the 1960s. The Satanic Temple advocates for various social and political causes, including LGBTQ rights, reproductive rights, and the separation of church and state. The organization often uses provocative imagery to draw attention to its causes, leading to backlash and controversy from various groups.

The incident at the Satanic Temple in Massachusetts highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the organization and its members in the face of discrimination and violence. The temple has been a target for various hate crimes and threats, but continues to advocate for its beliefs and causes. The involvement of law enforcement agencies such as the FBI in investigating these incidents underscores the seriousness of the threats faced by the temple and similar organizations. Despite the challenges, the Satanic Temple remains committed to its mission of promoting secularism and advocating for social justice issues.
