The media in Europe has been filled with negative stories about Rwanda and its government, with reports suggesting that the country is repressive and citizens live in fear. These reports are not new to Rwandans, as similar stories surface regularly in Western media, especially around significant dates such as the annual commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. However, the recent wave of attacks on Rwanda in Western media has been unprecedented, with numerous critical stories emerging in a short period. The reports have relied heavily on testimonies from Rwandans in exile, some of whom have personal and political reasons to criticize the government.

Despite its challenges, Rwanda has made significant progress since the genocide, working towards reconciliation and recovery. The country has invited people from around the world to visit and see the reality for themselves, showcasing its efforts to become a global destination for tourism and business. Rwanda’s stability and economic growth have been acknowledged globally, with the country attracting tourists, businesspeople, and world leaders. Under President Paul Kagame’s leadership, Rwanda has transformed into a confident and dynamic democracy, providing universal healthcare, education, and housing to its citizens.

Efforts by the Western media to portray Rwanda as repressive and hostile are likely to fail as more people visit and experience the country firsthand. Despite the critical reports, President Kagame continues to enjoy overwhelming support from the Rwandan people, winning elections with over 90 percent of the vote. The attacks on Kagame and his government only seem to strengthen his popularity in Rwanda and across Africa. The Western media’s focus on Rwanda’s challenges may stem from an inability to accept the country’s success in finding peace and stability on its own terms, after enduring unimaginable horrors not long ago.

The false narrative being pushed by the Western media about Rwanda being repressive and hostile will eventually be debunked as more people witness the country’s progress and prosperity. Rwanda’s success story, despite its tragic past, stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of its people. The attacks on Rwanda in the media are seen as attempts to undermine the country’s sovereignty and self-determination, but they are only serving to bring the Rwandan people closer together in support of their government. President Kagame’s leadership has been instrumental in Rwanda’s transformation, and the continued progress and development of the country are proof that the attacks from the West are unfounded and do not reflect the reality on the ground.
