Military commanders have publicly criticized the Pentagon’s response to the threat posed by the Houthis in the Red Sea, calling for a stronger reaction. Retired RADM Mark Montgomery emphasized the need for the U.S. to take more aggressive actions against Iran for supporting the Houthis, warning that the attacks will persist without consequences imposed on Iran. Gen. Michael Kurilla of CENTCOM sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, expressing concerns that current policies are ineffective in deterring Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. The letter called for a comprehensive approach involving economic, diplomatic, and military pressure to dissuade the group.

The Houthis launched attacks on shipping vessels in the Red Sea in response to Israel’s invasion of the Gaza Strip, causing disruptions and endangering the lives of crew members from various countries. The U.S. National Security Council stated that they have been employing a comprehensive approach, including sanctions and designating the Houthis as a global terrorist organization, to address the situation. The U.S. has warned the Houthis of consequences if they do not halt their illegal attacks, which have negative impacts on regional economies and humanitarian aid delivery.

Officials described the conflict with the Houthis as the most intense sea battle over a six-month period, with almost daily attacks by the group. Cmdr. Eric Blomberg highlighted the serious threat posed by the Houthis, emphasizing the need for caution as the group continues to launch attacks. The recent attack on a Greek-flagged oil tanker in the Red Sea was attributed to the Houthis by the British military, further escalating tensions in the region. The UK also suspended arms sales to Israel in response to the conflict.

CENTCOM announced the destruction of Houthi drones and vessels near Yemen due to the imminent threat they posed to U.S. and coalition forces. Rear Adm. Marc Miguez acknowledged that more aggressive strategies had been proposed but were not implemented due to concerns about an Iranian response. Miguez explained that decisions regarding strikes and responses to threats are made at the National Command Authority level, considering the potential repercussions from Iranian-backed groups like the Houthis.

The Pentagon has not provided additional comments on the situation, but an NSC spokesperson refuted claims that the administration had opted against a more aggressive approach due to fears of an Iranian response. The ongoing conflict with the Houthis in the Red Sea poses significant risks and challenges for U.S. forces and coalition partners. Military commanders continue to advocate for a stronger response to deter the attacks and hold Iran accountable for supporting the terrorist group. The complex dynamics in the region require a comprehensive strategy that combines diplomatic, economic, and military measures to address the threat posed by the Houthis.
